They sense magical energy through the gem on their forehead and slither underneath fallen leaves until they find a good source of food. They can become territorial if the surrounding magic level is low, since they survive on absorbed magical energy. They provide a valuable service for the environment, as crystallized magic is toxic to most species and absorbing the extra magic radiation makes the area more safe. They are called familiars since they are popular pets for mages due to their ability to absorb and store magical energy.
These wyrms have lost their eyesight over the generations, due to their reliance on sensing magical energy. While they are highly resistant to magical radiation, that resilience can be overwhelmed by particularly toxic magical environments, leading to occasional cases of pitch black, lace, and glow.
