I've taken quite an interest in the High Mountain growlers recently so I've complied some information on them and I'm looking for other handlers to contribute anything I've missed and correct me on anything that might be wrong. Let's figure out what these beasties are all about together!

This "guide" is by no means complete and I encourage everyone to help flesh it out!

FACTS
-HiMo society is modeled after that of the hyena, where the females are always the dominant ones
-HiMos are known to chase regular growlers out of their territories

MARKINGS (I know there are a ton more but I didn't feel like compiling them all right now...)
-Two stripes on chin, aka snake bite: Only seen on females, and the mark of an alpha
-Single stripe on chin: Former alpha, also only seen on females
-Figure 8 "snoot print": the mark of an omega
-Full band around ear with pitch black: berserker, the sign of a very dangerous wyrm, as seeon on Chernabog
-Red ear tip: full-fledged shaman, as seen on Baba
-Dot within a circle: "the mark of a shaman in training. When accompanied by a red band around the lower jaw, it marks the shaman as having gone on their journey to the spirit world, which is the final test before being considered a full clan shaman." (said by Chuck in the glade)
-Under eye "swoop and dot": scout, as seen on Ivy
-Pointed T: Treetop Clan member
-Single line with two dots above: Two Sisters Clan member
-Zigzag line: River Clan member, as seen on Bathory
-Four dots in a line: Tracker Clan member
-Arrow: Treetop Clan member
-Three claw mark like lines: "a hunter who has been instrumental in taking down large, dangerous prey, usually another carnivore" (said by Chuck in the glade)
-Two claw mark like lines: "a valued pack hunter, worthy of respect" (said by Chuck in the glade)
-Three dots: ?
-Swoop under eye: ?
-Spiral that looks like a lower case "e" with varying numbers of dots: ?
-Single horizontal line: ?
-Single horizontal line with dot above it: ?

My favorite subject <3. Good idea to have it stored on a thread! Here are a few. I'll go over my notes I've been keeping later and see if there is anything missing.

Some himo do not belong to a clan. Gub for example has no tribe marking.

The spiral mark with dots on my treetop Alphas ear means she set off on her own to make her own clan instead of fighting to the top. Or at least that's what I think I remember D saying.

There is a new "leyroy" mark we are unsure of what it looks like yet but these Himo are the ones that go in first to battles. If I remember correctly.

They are to a degree. They're the bigger, badder, tougher growler strain. (Think Bloodwings vs tatterwings.) They take over territory and push the regular growlers out into other areas if there are a large number (think of when we bred 12 pure himo in one season). The regular growlers as a consequence are meaker and often have bites, scars, etc. So they do cause changes to our regular growler population but aren't a "threat to their existence"

I have updated my page, hopefully I am somewhere up to speed. I feel like I am missing a lot of names though.

So I finally got a chance to look at my HiMo and oh gosh, he's absolutely vicious and crazy >.< He has the red ring around his ear with pitch black throughout. He is part of the river clan. He has the three claw marks meaning he's a very successful hunter who is instrumental in taking down large prey. And he has the mysterious three dot marking.

So I think this thread would also be good for theories on what we think the markings might mean. If not I can move it to a separate thread. I have many theories but this one is one that won't leave my head.

Now I am probably 100% wrong on this but this marking on Gubs face

Has always reminded me of a bass clef just with the dots on the opposite side. I'm a music nerd so it is the first thing that came to my mind. Now with him being clanless it got me to thinking that maybe he might be a bard? Going from clan to clan singing his derpy little songs and helping in battle where he needs (considering he is a Leroy now lol).


Speaking of This is the leyroy mark. It is a swatch of red over the eye. If I remember right it is pretty much the one giving the markings saying "oh your not quite bright you are a Leroy" and just haphazardly putting the mark on the eye.

So something I have noticed that would be a good note to put with this.

Most of the HiMo that have pitch black belong to the river clan. Being that Bathory seems a little unstable this is unsurpring lol.

I have noticed that most of the Leyroy belong to the treetop clan. Which I find hilarious since Kodama is suppose to be one of the smartest alphas. Maybe she just finds she can manipulate the dumb ones easier XD. Explains why she tolerates Gub.

zig zag mark on cheek- river clan
three lines on other cheek- accomplished hunter
single chin stripe- former alpha
Slash w/ claw mark on nose- ????
