Making my first plush/doll.

So I've started the (relatively slow because I keep jumping about between everything) process of making my first art doll. A cute little bat. c:
Right now its all in the learning/practicing phases. I plan to make a second bat after having learned a bit more.

but yes lets look at the pics.

Sadly at the moment I cant find process pics of the body? Which is odd because I remember taking plenty.. bleh.

Rough sculpted head:




Rough sculpt head with body (fur isn't trimmed. Got to test if this practice fur IS properly trimmable). It isn't attached at all so it looks a little wonkey.


D helped me out with smoothing the head with some awesome advice in stream! I was able to fix the head without having to sand it down, and without breaking anything. c:

His head/nose reminds me of Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective.

Progress is being made on battydoll.
Pardon the paint on my hands.

I've shaved the fur a bit and it's looking quite a bit more well groomed. I'll probably trim more before its done.


The paint on the head is coming together a bit. I coated it in solid and then just have been applying in little touches. Going for a certian look, but my brushes weren't agreeing with me and splotched a bit. Blergh. Oh well.

I'm making a bigger one with some soft fabric cut from old clothes... We'll see how that goes.

Great job so far. Can't wait to see it finished. Did you sculpt the eyes/nose individually and then add them or did you sculpt the indentations out of the solid head to create the eyes/nose?

Thanks! I've got some matte varnish I need to test before I use it as a sealant and then put the doll together next.

For the eyes I used a small marble/bead and pressed it in for placement, then made clay balls about the same size as the placeholder bead. I let the clay eyes dry while I worked on the head, then removed the beads and placed them in the eye holes. They were dry enough to not fall apart while the rest of the head was still (gently) pliable. I likely wet the back of the eye a bit to give it a more secure imbedding in the clay (I cant remember exactly. xD Thats what I usually do when I attach clay to clay though.) Then I just kind of made sure they looked right where they sat.
I'm tempted just to find out where I can buy more small marbles/beads without a hole so I can just use them as they make pretty eyes.

As for the nose, That was done in the regular process (lots of squishing and re-squishing) as I built the head ^v^ I didn't sculpt that one separate this time. Though it'd probably have followed the same process of making connecting both ends with wet clay if I had.
