What do you tell people about wyrms?

So recently, my interest in wyrms has become more public than usual. Typically I didn't really let anyone over my house and never had to explain what these fluffy creatures squiggling everywhere were. (And why I had over 50 of them >.<)

But as of lately, one of my close friends really found out about my obsession through open communication. AKA I left a wyrm or two out and she saw them. She also saw my quite large handler chain the other day and asked what it was.

In addition to that, when I go to the post office to mail wyrms internationally, I always have to fill out a customs form and have to explain what I'm mailing. I normally put something along the lines of art doll or fine arts, etc. But that doesn't help the confused look the post officers give me.

So I was wondering, how do you explain to people about wyrms? What do you tell them? Do you mention about the cost or talking to other handlers on the forums?

I mention the basic mechanics of the game (they're a breedable art doll. you breed them by combining the genetics on the card then pay the artists to create the offspring) and the community and how friendly everyone is/how much I love everyone in it. If they ask more questions I answer them to the best of my ability. Usually in the process of answering I pull up the wiki and go "well thankfully we have our own websites too!" and show the forum if they're at all interested in the game itself.

Lol I been talking about wyrms at my job since the winter babies where show. Of mine. So one of my coworkers is like cute and on a day where it slow I might bring one in but she think it interesting and would be interested if she didn't have 5 kids to feed lol. But I strait out tell people and even when I go to ythe post office and put them in packages the mail lady ask what is it and think it cute

I try to keep it a bit under wraps - what I did with Tomkins, was I explained they were OOAK art figurines that have various breeds and species. They have genetics, and I explain basically how the genetic work, and how you get more wyrms. I explain how interesting it is with the genetics component (I've always loved genetics which is easy to see with my love of breeding and my love of learning hamster genetics).

I don't mention too much, but that's about all I say. I go into more detail if asked.

I've tried explaining it, they don't get how you can breed them being they aren't alive.

Or why I'd waste that much money on them, which being thats what they center on I explain if I sold them all I could afford my first car. Which isn't something I could do. and then they kind of get it. kind of. (Not something I plan on doing just an example)

Anymore I just say art-dolls or nothing. Its easier then trying to explain things to have them be jerks about it

What I tell people is very dependent on the person. I don't tell my family anything about it other than I'm buying stuff from an artist that I like. If they knew the extent of how much money I spend on this game they'd try to guilt trip me out of doing it. They don't care what I'm doing to make myself happy (provided it isn't dangerous of course), but they can get slightly judgmental about things that they don't get the appeal of that cost a lot of money. On the other hand I tell most of my friends at least something about it. I give more detail to those I think would like the concept of the game and less to those that I think wouldn't. Interestingly, my boyfriend of a year and a half is one of those who doesn't "get" wyrms. I explained the game to him very early in our relationship and he, in the nicest possible way, said that he thought it was stupid (his word, not mine!). I told him that he was entitled to his opinion and I would not bore him with talking about it, but that I think some things he likes are stupid as well. We agreed to disagree and are respectful of each other's different interests.

The bottom line is that some people will respect your decision and others may not. My advice is to remind those who don't get the appeal of the game that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and they should respect that this is something that makes you happy. Everyone has hobbies that other people find strange!

I'm lucky in that I haven't really had to explain them to anyone besides my parents yet, though I don't think they nor Smashy will understand my fascination xD

If I were to explain it though to a friend, I would probably call them handmade art pieces that you can use online. And i'd probably leave it at that since I think if I went into it more I might scare someone.

I fear I may have to reference something like Webkinz, but say 'more grownup' after it.

I call it what it is, a pretty awesome collectible game. I've worn my wyrms to school a couple times and it's a good opportunity to actually say a little bit about wyrms and how they work.
