So can you like interact with other player's pets and stuff or is it just a waiting/trading/breeding game?

It's more of a waiting/trading/collecting/dressup game. :) You can't interact with other players' pets or breed your own 2nd gens, but you can get a variety of items to dress up your pets.

And NoMora, you just adopt the monthly pets when they come out and wait for them to 'grow' through the month. You can trade for what you want like swapping one outcome for another and really it's kind of complicated to explain.
