Best Furry Cons?

I live in Indiana and I want to go to one furcon besides IFC in the coming year. I've already been to MFF and while it was fun, I think I want to try going somewhere else for my next adventure. I don't really have any buddies I can share a room with, being fairly new to the whole fandom and convention going scene, so I'm going to be trying to save up enough for a room for myself since I don't know if I can find someone I'd be comfortable sharing with.

Since I'm going to be putting a lot of cash into funding this trip, I want to make it a good one. So, I'm curious to know if anyone here has been to a con they would recommend and why they liked it. Right now I'm looking into Motor City Fur Con, Anthro Ohio, or possibly Anthrocon if I can manage to save up enough for it.

If you've been to these or to another con on my end of the states that you'd recommend (or one you'd recommend avoiding) I'd love to hear about it! Also if you have suggestions on how to maybe find room buddies, I'd appreciate that too. I have a few things I prefer for a good con experience, but the biggest ones are having places to get food within easy walking distance of the hotel/convention space, and for the con in general to not have an emphasis on adult/fetish content. I don't drink, so a con that is all about booze is probably not really my thing either.

I've been to BLFC, RMFC (no longer exists), MFF, and AWU (just had its first con, will be returning next year in Utah in August :3

My personal favorite, is BLFC in Reno Nevada. Its a little ways out, in may, but that should give you enough time to save up ^-^
I'll also be going to FC in Cali next month

(BLFC: biggest little fur con, RMFC: Rocky mountain fur con, AWU: anthro weekend utah, FC: Further Confusion)

I'd like to go to BLFC someday, since I know Beastcub goes to that one sometimes and I'd love to meet her sometime, since I have 2 partials from her. What did you especially like about BLFC?

Theres a lot ^^;
The dealers den is HUGE and it always has stuff for the fursuiters to play around with in the large open center area.
They have gotten some pretty big name performers to come (Uncle Kage was supposed to be there last year, but his flight got canceled so he was unable to show up :( ).
Its a really big con, but the con space is massive so it really doesnt feel cramped.
There are restaurants IN the hotel and con space that are very affordable.
the room block that gets reserved is gigantic, Ive rarely heard of someone having to room out of the con center itself.
Telephone goes.
The staff and hotel LOVE us, so they are always excited to see who comes and engage with the suiters.
Theres a walmart just across the freeway from the hotel, so if you need to buy something, theres a store right there.

Its just a TON of fun. There is always something going on and the energy is great. The theme coming up for next year, is Musicals :D

Anthrocon is really fun. As the world's largest furry convention, it has quite the array of activities/panels. If I had to go to one con, it'd be this one just for the scale + Pittsburgh's welcome. They have forums set up for room-sharing, which I haven't seen specifically for the other conventions I will mention. (I may be wrong on that.)

Further Confusion is in San Jose, CA. Not exactly your neck of the woods, but I mention it since you mentioned BeastCub. She shows up to that pretty consistently (I am pretty sure she is local.) One of the five largest conventions in the United States. Much more of a room-party-con than even Anthrocon (in my opinion), but that doesn't mean that there isn't plenty of stuff to do at the convention proper. It is in San Jose so it is more expensive hotel-wise.

Anthro New England and Furpocalypse are both New England conventions, and are both comparably sized. Anthro New England is relatively new, but has been growing quite quickly. It might be a fun, smaller con to attend. It was very focused on artistic panels the year I went. Furpocalyspe is an older staple borne out of Furfright; while fun, there seems to have been some issues with the venue? (I haven't attended the past few years.) I would ask someone who has been recently. They have the usual array of panels.
Edit: Apparently, the rumors I heard about issues with venue + general decline of the con seem to be true. :( Again, I haven't been in 3? 4? years.

Fur the 'More used to be in Maryland, but now is in Virginia. It is a bit smaller, but is a really social and fun convention. It is smaller than then other cons I have mentioned, but I do not think that that detracts from the convention.

I have heard decent things about BLFC and live only ~3 hours away, so Hawkpelt's reply caught my eye. Might have to check that one out. :P

TBH, I would not suggest Furpocalypse.

TLDR, it's not a con for someone looking for anything aside from a drunken dance party con. The convention originally was known as Furfright, which was an amazing convention and my local con. When the 2 con chairs decided to end the con, they sold it to the folks who run Furpocalypse.

It is most definitely VERY different now. That's the reason I didn't go this year, and why I have zero intention of ever selling at or attending that con again

Giving my two cents on furcons. I live in NJ so I mainly go to east coast cons with the exception of Midwest Furfest. My favorites are now:

1. Anthrocon
Large con with a lot of vendors. Lots of panels/people. It can be a little tricky to navigate and finding dinner can be a little bit of a pain. Finding hotels can be a pain due to influx of people. Easy to ID staff.

2. Furthemore
Medium sized con. Lots of vendors, sizeable artists alley. Easy to tell who staff are and get questions answered. I had no issues getting badges and getting right into the swing of things. Con hotel can be a little expensive. Offers a decent variety of panels to attend.

3. Tinypaws
Small con, just starting up. Run by our lovely seamstress K'gra who used to run Furfright. Good focus on the artists. Easy to deal with staff (but a little harder to ID folks just walking about). The focus is on creativity/families unlike any other con I've been to. I enjoyed this change of pace and even hosted panels here. Very comfortable atmosphere.

As for Furpoc I also do not recommend it. I had an awful experience -selling- at that con. I have never just attended it but my SO did. She said there were barely any panels to attend and most were late at night. (Meaning folks just circled the Den for hours with nothing to do.) Too much emphasis on DJs for us. That does not mean it can't be good to go to if that's your thing. However, I encourage you to investigate it further because this past year there was a lot of issue with the hotel itself and staying there may be unpleasant. (Hotel staff being nasty/unhelpful/unwilling to do things for attendees, hotel flooding, sketchy elevators, dingy lighting, mold, etc.)

I have high recommendations for BLFC as well. When I lived in Wisconsin, we decided to check it out one year after hearing good things. It was by far the best fur con experience I have had. Now I live about half an hour away from Reno.

Tons for fursuiter to do. Always fun props to play with and always a theme that actually gets utilized! They put a lot if thought and effort into running that convention. Staff is always great, the location can't be beat, and they have a dance on Saturday that goes until Sunday morning! I never have a shortage of things to do at this convention. Attendance keeps rising every year. Probably one of that fastest growing cons I've witnessed.

Definitely worth a trip if you can manage to afford it. (And I can definitely say Beastcub is a delight to talk to. I think I've had a conversation with her almost every year I have gone.)

With all these recommendations, I'm thinking I want to save up and try to make it out to BLFC. It'll be a lot, but maybe I can save up enough and make a partial suit or two to sell to help fund it. I'd probably have to fly. Though maybe I can figure out how to take a train from Indiana out to there. I've decided I like travel by train.
